In May, the sunny days return, which awakens your desire to hear the sea as a background noise... We examined the meteorological conditions around the planet and asked our crystal ball to tell us where the sun shine is the brightest. From the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean islands, here is a list of the best destination to benefit from the sun’s rays.
Around the Mediterranean
In Greece, each and every stone is like a wonderful history book that you flip through before resuming reading your novel in one of the secret Cycladic creeks... Tourists have not yet invaded the sand of Cyprus and Crete... The perfect time to take a dip. The water might be a little cool but the Mediterranean is so beautiful when it is all yours... After a long winter, the island of Malta dresses in its most beautiful spring clothes. The sunshine of May, the rising temperatures and nature awakening give it a summery look already. In the streets of Barcelona, Valencia and Malaga, terraces invade the side walks and the bright blue sky makes the guitars sing. The sweet nights with a pleasant breeze are a good reason to travel in May.
In Arab land
The pyramids of Giza, the domes of Jerusalem, the playgrounds of Lawrence of Arabia, the Western Wall and the scents of spices... Those are only a few images that come to mind when talking about the mysterious land of the Levant. But we tend to forget about the expanses of sand of the Red Sea... And yet, not far from the historical sites and geological curiosities, you can enjoy the beach and the sun without moderation. Marsa Alam, Dahab and Eilat offer a stunning diversity to travellers. This is the case both on land, where the desert merges with the Sinai mountains, and in the sea where the marine fauna and flora are incredibly rich.
On the islands off the coast of East Africa
When you hear the words “dream beach”, images of Mauritius, Mayotte and the Seychelles come to mind. Half a world away, stilt houses and colourful and exotic dishes are waiting for you... Everything is so vibrant during the fifth month of the year. Not far from here, the steamy volcanoes and dense cirques which dance on the clear lagoons of the Reunion Island, will add a pinch of adventure to your spring holiday. Unless you prefer the hiking trails of the Canary Islands, despite the fact that the water there is still a little cool. As for Cape Verde, they have beautiful seaside resorts to offer. With their 23°C water, their contrasting landscapes and their mixed cultures, these islands lost in the middle of the ocean, are the perfect place to escape to in May.
In Indonesia
If your vision of happiness is about beautiful beaches, lush vegetation and spectacular coral reefs between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific, then your favourite destination is somewhere in the Lesser Sunda Islands. Luckily, Bali, Lombok and Flores are not crowded with tourists or flooded by the monsoon. What does this mean? That the month of May is the perfect time to top up your tan on Amed’s hammocks. Not far from the fine sand and turquoise water, Komodo’s rice fields, volcanoes, lakes and dragons attract curious explorers. Whether you want to relax or to venture in nature, the Indonesian lifestyle is made for you.
On the American continent
In Florida, temperatures and humidity level are going to rise slowly during the month of May. Which makes it the last niche to laze on the iconic spots of South Beach and the Keys. A several-hour flight from here, the trendy 50th American State will charm you with its beaches, seaside resorts and tropical vegetation. Hawaii - aka the Aloha State- is the perfect place for anyone who want to enjoy the exoticism of one of the world’s most remote destination. If you’re going to Rio, don't forget to climb up the Corcovado, which overlooks the Guanabara Bay, before enjoying the Carioca beach life.
In Oceania
When the rain gives way to the dry season, French Polynesia and New Caledonia are at their best. And this climatic phenomenon only occurs once a year. Enjoy the largest lagoon in the world, the scent of Tiaré flowers, the colourful marine fauna and take naps in the shade of coconut trees. These seaside jewels are worth travelling across the world just to see them. You’re not dreaming, a water this blue and this clear really does exist!
Destinations you should avoid in May
In India and South east Asia, the monsoon is a nightmare for travellers. In the United Arab Emirates, temperatures go through the roof. The southern winter is arriving in South America and the skies of Argentina and Chile are turning grey. In the Caribbean, the weather is a little more pleasant. Even though Cuba, Jamaica and Yucatan face some scattered rainfalls, travelling there is still possible. But it is hot... Note that the Caribbean Islands are still enjoying a good weather. Like in the Bahamas for example.
