When to go to Honduras?
A tropical climate prevails in Honduras, thereby ensure the thermometer temperature stays relatively stable all throughout the year. Temperatures fluctuate, for example, between 57°F and 80°F in January and between 64°F and 87°F in May. There are two highly distinct seasons which come one after the other, with the rain season from May to mid-November followed by the dry season, occurring from mid-November to April.
Known for its archaeological sites like the ancient city of Maya Copan, or for its idyllic Roatan island at the heart of the Caribbean, Honduras has proved itself to be relatively protected from mass tourism. This is a godsend for those visitors eager for unspoiled cultural and natural gems and a relaxing atmosphere. An entire heritage will reveal itself to you in different ways over the course of the seasons:
the season from mid-November to April is synonymous with the dry season and is characterised by low rainfall which is virtually non-existent in February and March with 3 and 7mm of rain recorded in the capital Tegucigalpa respectively. The sunshine proves to be both constant and pleasant, with 7 hours of daily sunshine from November to February. You can then count on an average of 8 hours per day in March and up to 10 hours in April. It is during this time that the weather is at its mildest with very good ratios between sunny days, rainy days and cloudy days. By way of example, the month of January generally has 25 days of sunshine with 4 days of rain and 2 cloudy days.
The rain season stretches from May to mid-November and gives the lion share of the rain with a record amount in October – 118mm of rain on average over the course of the month. Logically, rainy days are frequent during this season with up to 26 days of rain identified in September. Such conditions make the coastline vulnerable to cyclones and cities such as Tegucigalpa are subject to stifling temperatures.
The dry season proves to be a good time for a trip to Honduras. You will be able to take advantage of the optimum weather conditions during this time, with warm temperatures and the ever-present sunshine. The rain season, by contrast, proves itself to be a less appropriate time for a positive exploration of this central American country. Both on land and in the sea, the heavy rainfall results in limited visibility and leaves you open to risks of cyclones and unpleasant sensations with respect to the colder temperatures.
