Overview of 8 tourist regions
BOA VISTA ISLAND
An island of sand dunes and heavenly beaches (50km) where you are sometimes lucky enough to have the pleasure of swimming with turtles; the interior of the island is home to desert and rocky landscapes as far as the eye can see, and as you approach the coastline, blue seas, a lighthouse, a rusty wreck, flocks of rare birds and pods of whales come into view.
FOGO ISLAND
The black pearl of the Cape Verde islands; known as the "island of the great volcano", the "island of coffee", or the "island of black sandy beaches". The local wine is also famous. The contours of the volcano are breathtaking.
MAIO ISLAND
A small island with vast expanses of fine sand and warm and crystalline waters – an invitation to take time out and relax.
SAL ISLAND
Turquoise water, miles of golden beaches and arid landscapes. The island of the wind: a surfer's paradise. The small seaside town of Santa Maria is very pleasant and offers a lot of entertainment.
SANTIAGO ISLAND
The largest island of the archipelago and where you will find the capital, Praia; here you will find a culture and history influenced by the African continent; a land of contrasts with rugged terrain where beaches of black and white sand sit alongside pine forests, sugar cane plantations, banana plantations and deserts.
SANTO ANTÃO ISLAND
An amazing island combining the beauty of sea and mountains, Santo Antao is a must for hikers. This island offers a great diversity of landscapes: valleys and green and arid ridges, terrace agriculture, "Wild West" canyons, as well as a desert region bordered by large sandy beaches dominated by the Topo de Coroa, the island’s highest volcano, at the foot of which are nestled small isolated fishing villages. The coast, mostly rocky and often inaccessible, has some beautiful beaches.
SÃO NICOLAU ISLAND
While very attractive for its gentle hikes and welcoming population, Sao Nicolau island is nevertheless more difficult to access.
SÃO VICENTE ISLAND
Rich in culture, history, craftsmanship, and warm and festive evenings in the welcoming and lively city of Mindelo, this rugged island offers beautiful hikes through volcanic lunar landscapes with splendid panoramic views, and small fishing villages nestled on the edge of long sandy beaches. Sao Vicente is also a stopover for sailboats en route to the transatlantic. Swimming is a relaxing affair in Mindelo and Baia das Gatas and suitable for good swimmers in San Pedro, Calhau and Salamansa.
Attractions maps
Cape Verde is full of different landscapes - from Mindelo, undoubtedly the archipelago’s most beautiful city, to the beaches of Santa Maria or Sal Rei, via the Rope Route in Santo Antao and the Fogo volcano. Let yourself be tempted by board sports in Ponta Preta and Casa Velha, explore the Praia botanical gardens, or those in Paul, Sao Vicente. Enjoy warm and festive nights in Mindelo, and let’s not forget the ascent of the Ribeira Grande caldera.
Routes and distances maps
Many flights are available to this archipelago paradise. To reach Sal, a stopover is necessary in Lisbon or Barcelona and the flight takes around 8 hours. Finally, to visit and stay on the other islands, planes and boats are available for journeys ranging from 20min to 2h for the most part. Be aware that for inter-island shipping links, companies and ferries often change; depending on the boat, the crossing time varies from single to double; some links are irregular and information valid one day may not be so the next.
