The most beautiful beaches

plage Ses Illetes (Formentera) carte

Ses Illetes (Formentera)

One of the prettiest and most visited beaches in Formentera. Imagine: A ribbon of sand extending into crystalline waters. The clarity of the water makes diving a real pleasure whether you are a novice or more experienced. At the very north of the island, facing Ibiza, you can get there by car, bike or scooter. Well-patrolled, the water is not deep.

plage Cala llenya carte

Cala llenya

Another pleasant beach close to Santa Eularia. This has the advantage of being patrolled. It is linked to the neighbouring Cala Nova beach by a short track and close to one of the few campsites on Ibiza. Although it is shallow, the wind can make swimming dangerous but the beach is large enough for playing volley ball or other sports. Easy to reach by car or bus, disabled access to the water is gained via a gangway.

plage Es Arenals (Formentera) carte

Es Arenals (Formentera)

This beach is much larger than the neighbouring Ses Illetes. Access is via a gangway which reveals the beauty of the area. Located to the north of Formentera, it is easily accessible by car, scooter or bike. The beach is patrolled and the surrounding area is verdant, allowing for walks and picnics. However, there are few facilities and you’ll need to head back to Formentera to find signs of life.

plage Cala pada carte

Cala pada

This small beach close to Santa Eularia is ideal for families. But it does have fine sand, some of it is in shade and the restaurant on the water’s edge is the perfect place to spend the day. The beach, bordered by pine trees is not very busy - another advantage? The water is so clear it would be criminal to forget your snorkel mask. Come by car or bus or bike - it’s a nice ride.

plage En Bossa carte

En Bossa

With over a mile of fine sand, this is the largest beach on the island. If it’s not the most beautiful, it is the liveliest. Lined with clubs and restaurants, it’s always party time. You can dance on the tables to the sounds of a DJ or take in the chilled out atmosphere in one of the bars. Very easily accessible, you can take part in sports such as sailing, jet- skiing or paddle boarding.

plage Calo d’En Serra carte

Calo d’En Serra

Unfortunately, this pretty little beach with its slippery sea bed (bring shoes) makes swimming dangerous. On the other hand, divers and snorkelers are provided for and can discover a concealed inlet. One advantage: you will be far from the crowds.

plage Platges des comte (cala conta) carte

Platges des comte (cala conta)

This exceptional beach has a spirit matched only by Ses Illetes on Formentera (see below) - a tongue of white sand surrounded on three sides by opalescent water. Although it is visited heavily, it’s well worth the effort. The beach is divided in two: A fine sandy beach to the right of the rocks which descend into the sea on the left. Right in the middle is a restaurant, the ideal place for a glass or two at sunset. Access by car or bus is very easy (Sant Antoni is the nearest town, the bust stop is 50 metres away). Arrive early because the beach gets very busy.

plage Platja Xarraca carte

Platja Xarraca

This bay of red rocks and emerald waters is a natural wonder. Located in the north-west of Ibiza, this is rugged area free from tourism. Although it is not very large, access by car or bus is easy despite some hair-raising bends in the road. It’s an ideal spot for snorkelling or scuba diving and the sunsets will take your breath away. However, the beach is not patrolled, and the sea bed is covered with posidonia (the famous sea grass). This place is for lovers of nature in its purest state.

plage Benirras carte

Benirras

This gravel beach is a haven of tranquillity. Nestled among the greenery, a few miles from Sant Miguel, the setting invites you to relax, lined as it is with small restaurants and a few picnic areas. For yoga lovers, a centre organises sessions on the beach. But what makes this place so special are the sunsets. As the sky reddens, the atmosphere pulses to the sound of the drummers who gather here at dusk.

plage Calo d’Hort carte

Calo d’Hort

This is the archetypal beautiful sandy beach of the island. At the south-west of the island, you can admire the sun setting over the islands of Es Vedra and Es Vedranelle from here. Keen divers and snorkelers can regale themselves between the rocks and cliffs which retain the heat of summer and make for a pleasant site out of season. It summer it can become very hot very quickly. The beach is easily accessible from the road and there are restaurants, sun-beds and other services available. The beach has disabled access too.

plage Platja de ses Salines (Migjorn) carte

Platja de ses Salines (Migjorn)

This huge beach at the very south of the island is one of the most famous in Ibiza. With its white sand, turquoise waters and magnificent views of S’Espalmador and Formentera Platja de ses Salines has the power to seduce. And seduce it does, being “the place to be” with its bars, music and dancing on the beach. To really enjoy this classified nature reserve, it’s best to visit in the low season. Access from Eivissa is easy, by bus or by bike, and there is disabled access too. The area is well patrolled and the gently sloping shore makes swimming easy for everyone.

plage Aigues Blanques carte

Aigues Blanques

Equally close to Santa Eularia, but further north, this inlet of golden sands is one of the most beautiful on Ibiza. The clarity of the water giving its name (Agua Blanca = white water) to the beach. Patrolled, with little wind and shallow water, it is a beautiful place to swim. A part of the beach is reserved for naturists. The beauty of the place and its ease of access make it ideal to return to if you are staying Santa Eularia or Sant Vincent.

plage Pou des Lleo (plage d’En Marti) carte

Pou des Lleo (plage d’En Marti)

Discover an enchanted place on this little beach. The fishing huts which surround the rocks and sand provide real charm. The area is ideal for snorkelling and you can bring children, but really you should come for the restaurant on the shoreline and the fishing rather than swimming. Bring sandals to protect your feet. On the east coast, close to Santa Eulalia, access by car is easy.
